The Wisconsin Dells attractions are not just aimed at adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers. With a wealth of local museums there is plenty to explore, from the historic to the unusual to the truly bizarre. From your conveniently located vacation rental at Spring Brook, you’ll find these attractions and many more just a short drive away.
In the picturesque Wyoming Valley, atop a towering 60’ chimney formation known as Deer Shelter Rock, stands the phantasmagorical attraction that defies words and confounds the imagination. The brain child of a young Wisconsinite named Alex Jordan, the original 14-room house was never intended to be a museum – it simply grew and adapted and evolved. Today it is a unique experience of interconnected rooms, a jumble of architectural styles, textures, and designs. Inside during the course of your walking tour you will encounter a 200’ sea creature born from nightmares, maritime displays including model ships and Titanic memorabilia, a recreation of Main Street USA, a Japanese Zen garden, and steampunk musical instruments. The highlight of your visit might be the breathtaking Infinity Room, a 200’ freestanding room made of glass whose floor projects into space, suspended 15 stories above the valley below.
For a glimpse of life at the turn of the 20th century, the beautiful Bowman House is a beautiful and worthwhile visit. Now home to the Dells Historical Society, this classic example of prairie architecture was built in 1904 and is home to beautiful hardwood floors, period furniture, and the H. H. Bennet Gallery. Included exhibits at this Wisconsin Dells Museums feature Native American history, farm practices like blacksmithing, ice harvesting, and hop pressing, and much, much more.
If you or anyone in your family is a ferroequinologist – i.e. a train enthusiast – make sure to visit the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, an outdoor “living” museum devoted to the golden age of railroad (1880-1916) and featuring its own small town train line. Explore the restored depot from 1894, tour the railroad cars, and enjoy a 50-minute ride along the same tracks used to export the iron ore from the Baraboo hills a century before. For even more trains, you can also visit the Riverside & Great Northern Railway. If you want to expand on your mining experience, be sure to visit Dells Mining Co. in downtown where kids can pan for rare gems and minerals.
If you are looking for a dash of the bizarre, the spectacular, and the unusual, Circus World brings a variety of classic circus entertainment to life all summer long to the Wisconsin Dells Attractions. Enjoy animal shows and rides, big-top entertainment, and magic shows sure to delight the entire family. For more of the truly bizarre, visit Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, home to indescribable oddities and attractions spanning 8 galleries, 2 theaters, and 7 mini-movies.
