Explore the outdoors at Devil’s Lake State Park! This park spans over 9,000 acres and is the largest state park in Wisconsin. Learn about what you can experience and get into when you take a trip to Devil’s Lake State Park!

Devil’s Lake State Park

At the heart of the park lies its namesake: Devil’s Lake! This body of water takes up 360 acres and is nestled between towering quartzite bluffs. The lake was formed approximately 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age when glaciers created natural dams, trapping the water and shaping the landscape we see today. Take a swim, kayak or fish in the lake’s crystal-clear waters.

The Bluffs

The quartzite bluffs surrounding Devil’s Lake are some of the oldest and most unique rock formations in North America! These date back to over 1.6 billion years. You’ll be awestruck at how high these cliffs rise – 500 feet above the lake! Be sure to hike the trails along the bluffs for some spectacular views. The East Bluff and West Bluff trails are particularly famous, helping you see different rock formations like Balanced Rock and Devil’s Doorway.

Balanced Rock and Devil’s Doorway

Balanced Rock is a precariously perched boulder that appears to defy gravity. Devil’s Doorway is a natural archway created by years and years of erosion. You can access both formations via the hiking trails, and we recommend that you do! It’s a must-see. Get a glimpse into the ancient history of the region by observing these rocky, geological marvels.

Hiking

Meander along Devil’s Lake State Park over 29 miles of hiking trails. If you’re more of a beginner, start with the Tumbled Rocks Trail. More adventurous hikers can challenge themselves to the East Bluff and West Bluff (Ice Age Trail) trails for challenging staircase climbs and rewarding views.

Rock Climbing

The quartzite cliffs of Devil’s Lake seem to just draw people to them! The park is one of the best climbing destinations in the Midwest, with over 1,600 climbing routes. If you’ve been climbing for a while, or just getting started – you have many routes to test and improve your skills, as you scale these ancient bluffs.

Water Activities

Swimming in Devil’s Lake is popular in the summer months, with two large sandy beaches available for visitors. Go kayaking and paddleboarding to explore above the water. Anglers can cast a line into the lake that’s teeming with fish, including trout, bass, and panfish.

Camping

There are over 400 campsites for tents, RVs, and trailers. The campgrounds are well-maintained and provide access to the park’s trails and recreational activities.

Winter Activities

Devil’s Lake is a year-round destination so there’s still much to see and do during the winter months. Trails are not groomed for use during the winter, but they aren’t closed. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing are popular during the colder season. See how the Steinke Basin Loop trail becomes a winter wonderland as you traverse on skis or snowshoes.
