See the Dells on an Amphibious WWII Vehicle!
Dells Army Ducks in Wisconsin Dells has utilized their extraordinary amphibious World War II DUKWs (short for 1942 Utility Vehicle All-Wheel Drive Twin Rear Axles and known as Ducks by military personnel) for their part-land, part-water tours since 1946, after business owner Melvin Flath traveled to California for his trucking business and encountered the strange DUKW at an auction. Bringing it back to Wisconsin, Flath charged 50 cents per person to ride the first of his Ducks at Pewaukee Lake on Sundays before relocating the operation to Wisconsin Dells.
Today, Dells Army Ducks’ tours take passengers on an exhilarating ride over Lake Delton and the Lower Dells of the Wisconsin River, traversing Dell Creek and seeing one-of-a-kind sandstone rock formations that have existed for over 14,000 years, including Lone Rock, Twin Ink Stands, Grotto Island, and Sugar Bowl.
